Pronunciation Minimal Pair Log

About this printable

Organize teacher-selected word pairs that differ by one sound.

Pronunciation Minimal Pair Log with eight entry rows, columns for Word pair, Sound contrast, Listening cue, Practice note, and two reflection prompts

What is on the page

The printable has eight entry rows with four labeled columns: Word pair, Sound contrast, Listening cue, Practice note. Two larger writing areas are labeled Before you begin and What to carry forward. Use a short identifier in the name/project space and define the date or period covered before making entries. If you need another page, repeat that identifier and add a page number by hand so separate records can be read in order.

How to use it

Confirm the contrast in the target accent and listen before trying to imitate it.

A practical starting point

Choose a word pair from the language and pronunciation variety being studied. Confirm that the intended sound contrast is relevant in that variety before practicing. Listen first, then record the cue that helps distinguish the pair. Keep spelling observations separate from sound observations, since written differences do not always show pronunciation accurately.
