This division with remainders worksheet contains twelve short calculations whose answers have a nonzero remainder. Write each result as a whole-number quotient followed by R and the remainder, such as “4 R 1.” The practice is designed around that notation rather than decimal or fractional quotients.
Find the largest complete group
For 17 ÷ 3, look for the largest multiple of three that does not exceed seventeen. Five groups account for fifteen, leaving two. The quotient is five and the remainder is two. Objects, a drawing, or a multiplication fact can show the same relationship.

Check both parts of the answer
Multiply the divisor by the quotient, then add the remainder. The result must equal the original dividend. Also check that the remainder is smaller than the divisor. If the leftover amount could form another complete group, the quotient is not yet large enough.
Keep the notation clear
Do not write the two answer numbers next to each other without a separator. “5 R 2” communicates a different value from “52.” Read an answer aloud as “five remainder two” and connect each part to the groups in the representation.
Use the key for a reasoning check
The answer sheet gives a quotient and remainder for every item. When an answer differs, compare the multiplication used to find the complete groups and the subtraction used to find the leftover amount. This separates a fact error from an error in interpreting what the remainder means.

All twelve printed problems use whole numbers and leave something over. This differs from the no-remainder worksheet in the library, where complete groups use the entire dividend. For written long-division working, use an extra sheet; the spaces here are intended primarily for the final quotient-and-remainder record.
