Begin with a topic and tentative ideas
This KWL chart printable provides three labeled columns for thinking before and after a learning activity. The first column records what the learner thinks they know, the second holds questions and the third records learning. The wording “think I know” leaves room to revise an idea rather than treating every starting statement as established fact.

Write questions that can guide investigation
Use the middle column for focused questions about the topic. “How do seeds travel?” gives a clearer direction than “plants.” Learners can work individually or discuss possible questions with a teacher. Leave the final column open until there is information to record, and keep notes brief enough to read across the page.
Return to the first column afterward
After reading, observing or discussing, fill the learning column with supported findings. Revisit starting ideas and correct misunderstandings instead of simply adding more facts. Unanswered questions can become a follow-up task. This blank organizer has no fixed answer key because its content depends on the chosen subject and sources. It is useful when the same page is reviewed at both the beginning and end of an activity.
