Main Idea and Supporting Details Organizer Printable

Start with a short, identified text

This main idea and supporting details organizer printable has sections for the source, one main idea, three details and an explanation of their relationship. Use it with a paragraph, short passage or clearly identified section. A focused amount of text makes it easier to distinguish the central point from details that are interesting but less relevant.

Identify one main idea, three supporting details and the evidence that connects them to a text.

State the idea in your own words

Write what the passage mainly communicates, rather than copying its title as the answer. Choose details that help explain or support that idea. A detail can be a fact, example or explanation from the source. If the passage does not provide three strong details, use the available evidence and discuss the empty space rather than inventing information.

Explain the connection

The final area asks how the details support the proposed main idea. This step can reveal when a detail belongs to a different point or when the main idea is too broad. Revisit the text and revise the wording as needed. Because this is an open-ended organizer, answers depend on the selected passage; a teacher or reader should check the reasoning against that source.
