Printable Subtraction Chart from 0 to 12

This printable subtraction chart shows differences from starting numbers 0 through 12. It focuses on calculations with nonnegative whole-number answers. The number on the left minus the number across the top gives the value in their shared cell.

Your subtraction reference chart

Nonnegative subtraction chart from zero to twelve, with minuends at left, subtrahends at top, and excluded cells shaded gray

How to read a fact

  1. Find the starting number in the left column.
  2. Find the amount to subtract in the top row.
  3. Follow the row and column to their intersection.

For 9 − 4, start at row 9 and move across to column 4. The shared cell contains 5. You can check the result by adding the difference and the amount subtracted: 5 + 4 = 9.

What do the gray cells mean?

A gray cell with a dash is outside the nonnegative facts covered by this chart. It does not mean the answer is zero. For example, row 3 and column 5 are excluded because 3 − 5 would give a negative result.

The diagonal contains zero because a number minus itself is zero. The column headed 0 repeats each starting number, since subtracting zero leaves it unchanged.

Notice how subtraction differs from addition

Changing the order changes the calculation. Row 9, column 4 gives 5, while row 4, column 9 is outside this chart. Keep the starting number and the amount being subtracted in their correct positions.

Practice with the reference

Ask a learner to choose a valid fact, read it aloud, and show the calculation with counters or a number line. Then cover the result and try to explain it without reading the cell.
