Cloud Sketch Journal

What this printable helps you do

Compare cloud shapes across two moments using sketches and plain language. Observe for a short defined period. A date, viewpoint and duration help make a later visit comparable. Keep a description of what you saw separate from the explanation you are considering. The page is useful even when you cannot identify the object or organism; a careful sketch and a clear question are better records than an unsupported name.

Cloud Sketch Journal printable with labeled areas: Time and viewpoint, Cloud shape sketch, Movement notes, Later comparison

What is on the page

Four large writing panels separate related parts of the task. Each panel has its own heading and ruled space. Use short notes, labeled sketches or a mixture of both, keeping each detail beside the heading it helps explain. The four headings are Time and viewpoint, Cloud shape sketch, Movement notes, Later comparison. Add a subject identifier and date at the top so the page can be understood when you return to it.

How to use it

Draw the visible outline from a fixed viewpoint and note which way it moves relative to a landmark. Start with one example rather than filling the whole page at once. Use ordinary language you will understand later and add a reference where a note depends on another source.

A practical example

A cloud above a roof may spread into a wider shape ten minutes later; sketch both views. This illustrates how to begin; the downloadable page is blank so you can use your own subject, materials and observations.

Review before you reuse it

Keep descriptions separate from forecasts because this page does not predict weather. Read the finished page from the perspective of someone who was not present. Clarify an abbreviation, mark an unanswered question and identify the next small action if one is needed.
