Leaf Rubbing Comparison Sheet

What this printable helps you do

Compare two fallen leaves with rubbings and labeled observations. Observe for a short defined period. A date, viewpoint and duration help make a later visit comparable. Keep a description of what you saw separate from the explanation you are considering. The page is useful even when you cannot identify the object or organism; a careful sketch and a clear question are better records than an unsupported name.

Leaf Rubbing Comparison Sheet printable with labeled areas: Leaf A details, Leaf B details, Shared features, Differences

What is on the page

Two upper comparison areas include sketch space, with two additional writing areas below for a synthesis or decision. Compare the same feature on both sides before drawing a conclusion from the differences. The four headings are Leaf A details, Leaf B details, Shared features, Differences. Add a subject identifier and date at the top so the page can be understood when you return to it.

How to use it

Place a fallen leaf under thin paper, rub gently with a crayon and label features you can see. Start with one example rather than filling the whole page at once. Use ordinary language you will understand later and add a reference where a note depends on another source.

A practical example

Compare a smooth edge with a toothed edge while keeping the crayon pressure similar. This illustrates how to begin; the downloadable page is blank so you can use your own subject, materials and observations.

Review before you reuse it

Use fallen material where collecting is allowed and do not infer species from a rubbing alone. Read the finished page from the perspective of someone who was not present. Clarify an abbreviation, mark an unanswered question and identify the next small action if one is needed.
