Cutting Practice Worksheet: Straight Lines to Curves

This cutting practice worksheet gives learners four different paths to follow: straight, sloping, zigzag, and curved. Each path has a starting dot and a finish label. Print one page for a short practice session, with an adult supervising the use of scissors.

The lines are arranged as separate activities. You can work on one path at a time instead of asking a learner to complete the whole page.

The straight path offers a simple starting task. The sloping path changes its direction gradually, the zigzag path introduces repeated turns, and the curved path gives a smoother change of direction.

Four scissor practice paths: straight, sloping, zigzag, and curved, with start dots and finish labels

Prepare a small activity

Print the page at a comfortable size. An adult can separate the rows into strips before the activity so there is less paper to handle at once. Use scissors appropriate for the learner and follow the supervision approach used in your home or classroom.

Before cutting, trace the route with a finger from the starting dot toward the finish. This gives the learner a chance to notice whether the line stays straight, slopes, changes direction sharply, or curves.

Move through the paths gradually

  1. Straight: begin at the dot and follow the short dashed segments across the strip.
  2. Sloping: notice that the route gradually moves lower on the page.
  3. Zigzag: pause at a change of direction and look at the next part of the path.
  4. Curved: follow the smoother turns without trying to turn them into sharp corners.

Let the learner repeat a familiar path before introducing another. The sheet is a practice resource, not a timed assessment or a developmental screening tool.

Adapt the page to the session

Use the lines as finger-tracing or pencil-following paths when scissors are not part of the activity. You can also cut out one row at a time for a shorter task and keep the remaining rows for another session.

Keep the starting dot on the strip so the direction remains clear. There is no need to add more decorations or a long set of instructions to the page.
