How to use it

Isolate x while preserving the comparison. For example, x + 4 < 9 gives x < 5 after subtracting four from both sides. An inequality usually describes a set of possible values rather than one exact solution.

Check and adapt

Test a value that satisfies your result and check the boundary separately. These questions involve addition only, so no multiplication or division by a negative number is needed. Keep strict and inclusive comparison signs distinct in the answer.

Answers in text

  1. x + 3 < 5: x < 2.
  2. x + 4 > 7: x > 3.

  4. x + 6 ≥ 11: x ≥ 5.
  5. x + 7 < 13: x < 6.
  6. x + 8 > 15: x > 7.
  7. x + 9 ≤ 17: x ≤ 8.
