How to use it

Compare positive fractions by rewriting them with a common denominator or comparing cross-products. For example, 2/3 is greater than 3/5 because 2 times 5 is greater than 3 times 3. Explain what the symbol says about the original pair.

Check and adapt

Use a benchmark such as one half when it makes the comparison easier. Read the completed statement aloud and check the symbol direction. A larger denominator alone does not mean a larger fraction, because the numerator matters too.
